Funcom lays off The Secret World’s lead designer:
Last month, we reported that Funcom was instituting “temporary layoffs” of a significant number of its staff. Recently, The Secret World’s lead designer, Martin Bruusgaard, told Develop that he was among those laid off along with “most” of the studio.
The Norwegian studio, whose last two major projects were the big budget MMORPGs Age of Conan and The Secret World, is now looking to focus more on smaller projects, skirting around the currently treacherous magma pit that is the subscription MMO market. Bruusgaard described his situation in a tweet as being “put on forced leave, along with most of our Oslo office.” Develop claims that this leave has affected at least 50 percent of Funcom’s staff.
It’s unclear whether these “temporary” measures are really temporary, or if Funcom intends to develop another big budget game on the PC.

Mists of Pandaria is exactly two weeks away, and that means it’s time for ads with fighting pandas, angry orcs, and malnourished humans to start popping up during prime time TV.

Alkaizer is first player in the world to hit level 100 in Diablo 3′s Paragon system:
Remember that feeling of excitement when you hit max-level in Diablo 3? It was a torturous recurring nightmare of deaths and tears, but you persevered until the end and were rewarded with a massive feeling of accomplishment and glory. Well that’s baby stuff now. Your character is a baby, and Alkaizer is a god.
Blizzard added the Paragon system to Diablo 3 only a few weeks ago, adding a huge alternate advancement system that allowed players to grind to their heart’s content and get some special perks for their effort, not the least of which is a fully capped 300% boost to your magic find stat. Alkaizer maxed out that system just a few days ago while livestreaming.
It’s tough to conceive just how much XP Alkaizer needed to make that happen. The chart over at DiabloFans does a great job of representing the Paragon system XP reqiurements as a pie chart.

Developer Silverball Studios revealed its Pro Pinball series revival on Kickstarter last week with the admirable goal of creating “the ultimate pinball game” by adding a brand new table to the series crafted by renowned table designer Pat Lawlor. And yes, I nearly jumped out of my chair when “Pinball Wizard” started playing through my headphones as I typed this.
Released in 1995, Pro Pinball’s original four tables – The Web, Timeshock!, Big Race USA, and Fantastic Journey – garnered an enthusiastic reception from pinball fans looking for a PC version of their favorite hobby. Adrian Barritt, once part of original developer Cunning Developments, wants his new studio Silverball to refine and revive Pro Pinball’s tables after repurchasing the game’s license.
Lawlor created the Addams Family and Twilight Zone tables, the latter considered the most successful pinball table ever made. I certainly recall my ears always catching that iconic finger-snap floating in the smoky haze of my arcade binges.
“This project is like a dream come true for me,” Lawlor said in the Kickstarter campaign’s video. “We can explore possibilities economically impossible in a standard pinball machine.”
Silverball hopes to release a single remastered table in April, June, and August 2013. The fourth table, Big Race USA, is a free download on the Kickstarter page as a bonus for visitors. The new table has a slated October 2013 release.
Pro Pinball’s funding goal rests at $400,000. Donor rewards include t-shirts, pins, badges, signed box copies of the original and new tables, and your portrait appearing on the backglass of the new table.

She travels with a hulking hunk of metal affectionately named “Death Trap.” And she’s the first previously announced (and briefly controversial) post-launch DLC coming on October 16 for Borderlands 2.
Gearbox posted a short announcement of the Mechromancer’s details earlier today on its official website. Those who pre-order Borderlands 2 receive Gaige for free as a bonus, but she’s also purchasable as a standalone download for $10. Gaige joins the Gunzerker, Commando, Siren, and Assassin classes in jamming zillions of randomly generated guns onto Handsome Jack’s hilariously huge chin when Borderlands 2 releases September 18.

EVE Online top player was US official killed in Libya:
Rest in peace Sean Smith, known to EVE players as Vile Rat, a senior figure who held many of the strings that made the game’s universe dance. Smith, a US state department official, was killed yesterday during an attack on the US consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.
The BBC say it’s believed the consulate was stormed in retaliation to a US-produced film considered insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.
Smith had been a long-time player of EVE, a senior figure in Something Awful’s notorious Goonfleet and an on-and-off member of the game’s player-elected Council. Fellow EVE godfather, The Mittani, paid tribute to his friend in a moving blog post which sheds light on just how important Smith had been to the EVE community.
“Sean was a great guy,” writes The Mittani, “and he was a goddamned master at this game we all play, even though a lot of people may not realize how significant an influence he had. It seems kind of trivial to praise a husband, father, and overall badass for his skills in an internet spaceship game but that’s how most of us know him, so there you go.”
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Smith’s family, and all those who flew with him. The universe won’t be the same.
